Welcome to Fall in Gainesville, Florida

There is something special about Fall in Gainesville.

Now, before anyone gets too excited, let me clarify what I mean by “fall.”

I do not mean sweaters, crisp mornings, or watching colorful leaves float gently from the trees.

This is Florida.

In August, it is still hot enough to question every life decision that requires you to walk across a parking lot. We are still checking the radar for afternoon thunderstorms, carrying water bottles everywhere, and telling ourselves that surely the humidity will break soon.

It will not.

But even though the weather may not change much, Gainesville does.

August marks the return of school schedules, college students, football season, community events, and the familiar routines that make Gainesville feel like Gainesville.



And before long, the entire town starts turning orange and blue.

You Learn to Check the Gator Football Schedule Before Making Plans

I grew up in Tampa and was never much of a football fan.

So when I came to Gainesville, the culture surrounding Florida Gator football was completely new to me.

I had never lived somewhere where an entire community seemed to organize itself around a football schedule.

You learn quickly.

Before planning a Saturday dinner, you check whether there is a home game.

Before driving across town, you check the kickoff time.

Before wondering why traffic is backed up, you check the football schedule.

And eventually, you stop asking why everyone is wearing orange and blue because the answer is almost always the same.

Go Gators.

Football season in Gainesville is more than what happens inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Homes hang Gator flags. Businesses decorate their storefronts. Tailgates appear in parking lots, yards, and just about anywhere someone can fit a folding table and a cooler.

Homecoming is practically its own season.

Schools close. Schedules change. Businesses adjust their hours. Families make plans.

You do not necessarily have to love football to appreciate what happens to Gainesville during football season.

There is a sense of camaraderie that is hard to describe until you experience it.

Someone invites you to a tailgate. Friends gather around the television. Neighbors who barely spoke all summer suddenly have strong opinions about play calling.

Before you know it, you own an unreasonable amount of orange and blue clothing and have learned that “The Swamp” is not a reference to one of our local wetlands.

If you ever get the opportunity to attend a Florida Gators football game in The Swamp, take it.

Even if football is not really your thing.

Standing in a stadium filled with thousands of people cheering together is one of those Gainesville experiences everyone should have at least once.

Fall Festival Season in Gainesville and North Central Florida

Football may get most of the attention, but fall is also one of the best times of year to explore Gainesville and the surrounding communities.

Festival season begins.

Art festivals, farmers markets, community celebrations, outdoor events, pumpkin patches, and family activities start filling calendars throughout Gainesville and North Central Florida.

Yes, we will still be wearing shorts.

Yes, someone will absolutely be drinking a pumpkin spice latte while the temperature is 87 degrees.

We do not let these details interfere with our fall traditions.

One of the things I have come to appreciate most about living here is how many different communities and experiences are within a short drive.

You can spend Saturday surrounded by thousands of people at a Gator football game and Sunday wandering through a small-town festival, farmers market, or local event.

There is always something nearby worth discovering.

Summer Isn't Quite Over on Florida's Nature Coast

While Gainesville is getting ready for football season, summer is still hanging on just a little longer along Florida's Nature Coast.

Scallop season continues in the Crystal River area into September.

If you have never been scalloping, add it to your Florida bucket list.

There is something pretty special about spending the day on the Gulf, jumping into clear water, searching through the seagrass for scallops, and coming home tired, sunburned despite your best efforts, and already talking about when you can go again.

Living in North Central Florida gives us the best of several worlds.

We have the energy and traditions of Gainesville.

We have small towns and communities with their own personalities and festivals.

And within a relatively short drive, we have the springs, rivers, and Gulf waters of the Nature Coast.

That is something I do not think we appreciate often enough.

August Is a Fresh Start

August is busy.

For those of us in property management, “busy” may be putting it mildly.

There are move-ins, move-outs, maintenance requests, parents, college students, school schedules, traffic, football weekends, and approximately 437 things that everyone needs done before Friday.

Or at least it feels that way.

But underneath all the busyness, August has always felt like a fresh start.

Families settle back into routines.

Students begin new chapters.

Businesses prepare for another season.

People move into new homes and become part of new neighborhoods.

And our community starts coming alive again.

Whether you were born and raised in Gainesville, moved here years ago, recently relocated to North Central Florida, or are just beginning to discover this part of the state, I hope you take some time this fall to enjoy where we live.

Accept the invitation to a tailgate.

Visit a local festival.

Try a restaurant you have driven past a hundred times.

Explore one of the small towns surrounding Gainesville.

Spend a day on the water.

Go to a game in The Swamp.

And wear a little orange and blue.

Even if football has never really been your thing.

You may be surprised how quickly Gainesville gets to you.
